Word/Expression Explanation
impregnation processing A process for impregnating the porosity of a casting with resin and inorganic materials and hardening it to prevent leakage of air, water, oil, etc., through the porosity. Impregnation processing may be organic or inorganic.
impurities Trace amounts of unnecessary materials contained in a target material.
inboard-outdrive engine A propulsion mechanism for small watercraft in which the engine is located within the craft's hull and the drive unit (screw propulsion) is positioned outside the stern.
indentation A recessed shape formed by applying pressure to a casting or a test material. In Brinell hardness tests and the like, the diameter of the recess formed in the test piece by a prescribed pressure and load is measured and then converted to ascertain its hardness.
induction hardening A heat treatment process which metals (iron/steel) are subjected to high-frequency electromagnetic waves to cause induction, overheating the surface for quenching. Since only the surface layer of the metal (iron/steel) is hardened in this way, the interior retains its original toughness, so the metal is hard on the surface while retaining its overall flexibility.
induction heating furnace An electric furnace in which the eddy currents in a material begin to flow via electromagnetic induction and the resulting Joule heating used to heat and/or melt metals. Induction heating furnaces are often used as melting furnaces for cast iron. Based on stirring power, they are categorized by capability into high-, medium- and low-frequency induction furnaces.
injection Filling the sleeve of a high-pressure die casting machine with molten metal and then pushing it forward with the plunger tip to fill the product cavity of a mold.
inner sheath A metallic cover on the inside of a cable preventing its insulating material from getting wet or otherwise damaged.
insert Casting and manufacturing in advance various accompanying items, such as a cast iron sleeve for an aluminum casting, and then putting them into a casting mold and pouring the aluminum or other metal in to adhere them together.
inside cut In aluminum die casting and the like, this is the underfill of a product caused by a crack generated on the product portion when breaking a gate with a press or a hammer after casting. Also called “breakage.”
inside diameter The inner diameter of an object with a cylindrical or spherical shape, etc.
insulation resistance The electric resistance between two conductors insulated by an insulating material.
intake An inlet for drawing in a liquid, gas or the like.
intensification In high-pressure die casting, using the pressure of an accumulator to increase injection pressure and then apply it to a casting design and product cavity.
interlock To connect multiple machines or devices together with a control device for coordinated operation.
internal defect A defect that exists within a product such as a blowhole, shrinkage, a pinhole, an impurity or an inclusion.
internal thread The helical grooves drilled down the length of cylindrical or conical holes for receiving a corresponding screw. Also referred to as a “female thread” for receiving a “male thread.”
inverse burr While burrs are generated by metal seeping into a gap between the mating surfaces of a mold, an inverse burr is a phenomenon that occurs when metal that has entered between the mating surfaces or into a dividing section of the mold remains in a convex position to the mold, resulting in product underfill.
