Word/Expression Explanation
hand grinder A rotating tool for deburring castings by setting a cutting tool or grindstone on its tip. It is commonly called a “Leutor” in Japan.
hanger shot for blasting machine A type of shotblast machine in which cast pieces are suspended on a hanger-shaped jig and then rotated while being blasted via an impeller or turbine for an even spread.
hard spot A hard inclusion that may damage tools or generate an area of different gloss on a die-cast part during cutting operations.
hardness tester A device for measuring the hardness (rigidity) of a material. It pushes a spherical or rectangular indenter into the material to determine its hardness by measuring the size of the indenture it makes.
heat treatment A processing method in which the properties of a metal are changed by heating and cooling it.
heating value The amount of heat generated by the complete combustion of a substance of a given unit mass. Heating value is a common index representing the performance or capability of a fuel, etc.
hexagon socket head bolt A bolt that has a hexagonal pit on its head. A hex key is used for tightening and loosening such bolts.
high-pressure die casting A casting method to produce a large number of castings with high dimensional accuracy in a short time by injecting molten metal into a mold. This method uses materials like aluminum, zinc and copper.
hoist A device consisting of a chain and a drum or the like for raising, lowering and moving heavy objects.
hole as cast A hole made in a casting from the beginning by a mold, sand mold, etc. In some cases, this becomes part of the product shape, but it also can be used for reducing volume to prevent casting defects and is sometimes used as a prepared hole for machining.
hollow The result of using a core, etc., to create a cavity inside a casting.
hollowing the back of a mold To partially shave away and remove portions of a mold on the side opposite the cavity surface. In gravity casting, low-pressure die casting, etc., doing this raises the temperature of the mold by reducing its weight, and inserting a thermal insulating material in the removed portion can effectively raise heat-retention properties.
home position The starting point of operations when a machine, a device, a robot, etc., performs a constant repetitive action.
honing stone A grindstone often used for polishing the inner surfaces of the cylinders in an engine block. With a cylinder honing machine, these honing stones are attached at set intervals onto the head of a rod that is inserted into the cylinder to press them up against the inner surface. They are then rotated while moving up and down to polish the surface.
hood An umbrella-shaped device installed above equipment to discharge smoke, odor, mist and the like.
horizontal mold A mold designed to be opened horizontally.
horizontal mold close type A common style of mold clamping with die casting machines in which the die base closes horizontally.
hot cracking A casting defect in which a crack occurs due to external stress or internal stress during solidification or while cooling immediately after solidification.
hot shortness A phenomenon where embrittlement occurs in metal materials when there is a sudden drop in its value of impact energy at a certain temperature range, despite no drastic changes in its mechanical or physical properties.
hub Parts or the structural assembly of parts located in the center of a wheel.
hydraulic fluid Oil used as a power-transmitting medium in hydraulic devices such as casting machines that operate using hydraulic pressure.
hydraulic pressure A drive source using a fluid (typically mineral oil) as an energy transmission medium. In a casting factory, it is used as a power source for a variety of equipment, including casting, molding and cutting machines. Also, a flame-retardant hydraulic fluid is used to prevent fires in the casting process.
hydrogen gas Gaseous hydrogen molecules (H2). It is a colorless, odorless gas that is extremely lightweight and highly susceptible to combustion and explosion. If contained in molten aluminum for casting, it causes defects in the final casting.
