This glossary lists in alphabetical order casting industry terms and their explanations.

galling | When molten metal comes into contact with a mold and diffuses to cohere. Galling is the damage to the product and the mold that occurs as a result of the mold and metal not separating during solidification as the mold opens. |
gas leakage detector | A device installed around a casting facility's underground pit or casting-related equipment which sounds an alert if it detects fuel gas leaking from a combustion device, fuel gas pipes, etc., or carbon monoxide (CO) generated by incomplete combustion. |
gas vent | A component or part of the mold that serves to remove air or core gas from the mold during the pouring process. When filling the mold with molten metal, the air therein is compressed, so the gas vent is used for expelling the air or gas inside and allows the molten metal to flow smoothly. In gravity casting or low-pressure casting molds, gas is generated by the core and needs to be removed via a gas vent in order to prevent the occurrence of gas defects in the cast pieces. (Same as air vent) |
gas-curing mold | Gas-curing molds may be organic or inorganic. The organic type includes a cold box process, which hardens phenol resin and isocyanate resin using an amine gas. The inorganic type includes a carbonic acid gas process, which hardens water glass with carbon dioxide gas. |
gate cup | A cup-like piece attached to the pouring gate on a casting mold used in low-pressure casting. Gate cups are meant for maintaining the molten metal's heat and are designed as an expendable part for eventual replacement. |
gate cutter | A device that removes the gates of a casting design, etc., by pressing or repeated application of stress via impacts or vibrations. |
gate system | The system of holes through which molten metal flows into the mold. It is a vital element in producing castings with a high yield and consistent quality. |
gating system | A design to produce a casting according to the engineering drawings. It specifies the machining allowance and draft angle for the product's shape, the pouring orientation and the parting line and surfaces, number of mold cavities, the positioning of the gate system, runner and riser, etc. |
gradient | The inclination of a surface. Expressed as an angle from the direction of motion. |
graphite | With carbon as its main element, graphite has excellent heat resistance and self-lubricity and it is used for preventing seizure in casting molds and other purposes. |
green sand mold | A sand mold formed by adding bentonite, water, starch or the like to silica sand. Casting with green sand molds is well known as it is the most common method for mass-producing iron castings. |
grinder | A device that rotates a disc-shaped grindstone for polishing the surface of a casting. It may be air-powered or electric-powered. |
grinding | A type of machining process in which a grindstone or the like is used to grind the surface of a work piece until it is smooth. |
grindstone | A tool made of stone and used for grinding or polishing castings, blades, etc. |
groove | A fine channel carved into a mold or a foundation that allows oil or water to flow along it. |
