Glossary of Casting Terminology "B"
This glossary lists in alphabetical order casting industry terms and their explanations.
Word/Expression | Explanation |
---|---|
backward limit | A position where an extrusion plate or a slide of a mold or core mold was returned by pull back with a cylinder or a return pin. |
baking | A high-temperature heating process performed at the end of the production process and used for hardening shell cores. |
bales | Compacted scrap metal after it has been fed into a press and compacted. Bales are used as a good raw material for producing cast iron, etc. |
band saw | A device with a strip of sawed blade set on two rotating wheels and driven by an electric motor to provide a continuous cutting action. |
barb fitting | A fitting designed to be inserted into the hose of a hose nipple. It differs from a screw-type fitting in that it has barb-shaped protrusions that prevent the hose from slipping off. |
base mold | A part comprising a mold and the base supporting the mold cavity (mold insert) on the stationary and movable sides. |
batch furnace | Furnaces for heat treatment can be largely divided into “batch” or “continuous” furnaces. A batch furnace has a single access door and allows for a single removal following a specified heat treatment period, hence it is suited for when there are multiple heat treatment conditions or for low-volume production. Continuous furnaces have an inlet and outlet and allow for continuous feeding of parts for treatment at regular intervals, hence they are suited for mass production. |
belt sander | A machine with a piece of belt-shaped sand paper rotated in a set direction at high speeds to perform polishing work. It is well suited for filing flat surfaces. |
binder | While many casting molds are made with sand, sand alone lacks the strength to make a mold, so a caking additive (binder) is mixed in to form the casting mold. Bentonite is used for green sand molds, furan resin for furan molds and phenol resin for shell cores. |
blade | The rotor blade of a vane pump (hydraulic pump) or fan part of the impeller of a shotblasting machine. |
blasting | To spray a liquid with an air spray gun, an electric spray gun and the like to adhere the liquid to a surface. |
blast quenching | Quenching in which the cooling of a die is performed in the air or a suitable gas atmosphere after heating so as to improve die strength and toughness. It is also called “air quenching.” |
blind hole | A hole that only reaches midway in an object, not fully penetrating it. |
blister | A defect that occurs when a material and/or the plating or coating film, etc., on top of it swell due to internal pressure. Blisters can appear in various forms such as a group of fine particles or a large swollen portion. |
blow | A defect that may occur during core making due to an excessively strong flow of air that prevents the sand from filling sufficiently. |
blow gate | A hole through which sand is blown into the shell mold or cold box mold. |
blowhole | A casting defect in which during solidification, air in the mold, gasses in the molten metal, gasses generated by the core, etc., are not fully expelled from the casting and result in holes, characterized by their round shape. |
blowout | Forceful spouting out of molten metal or gasses. |
bolt | A fastener for connecting two objects together, consisting of a head and a male helically threaded shaft. It is typically used to fasten things by either using a corresponding nut or being screwed into a female-threaded hole. |
booth | A partitioned space or room. This is generally set up for processes requiring an isolated environment like painting, cooling, finishing and robot operations. |
boss | A protruding feature on a work piece that is often used as a tightening hole for bolts/screws or as the center hole of a shaft. |
bottom pouring (system) | The basic casting design for gravity casting. The molten metal is poured via the runner from the bottom of the work piece and filled to the riser at the top of the work piece. |
boundary sample | A product sample for determining the quality of a cast piece by indicating the limits for acceptance or rejection. |
brazing | A metal-joining method in which two pieces of metal are bonded together using a filler alloy with a melting point lower than those of the metals being bonded. |
breakage | A casting defect also referred to as an “inside cut.” This is an underfill of a product caused by a crack forming on the product portion when removing the gate, burrs, overflows, etc. |
breakdown maintenance | The response following a breakdown or fall in performance such as corrective repairs to restore the item/equipment back to its previous operating state. |
Brinell hardness tester | A device that pushes a spherical indenter into a material to determine its hardness by measuring the size of the indenture made. |
buff | Using a grinder fitted with an abrasive felt cloth to smooth and polish the surface of a casting. |
burr | A thin sheet of metal that forms from the shape of the casting when molten metal makes its way into the gap between the parting surfaces of a mold when it is poured in at high flow speed and pressure. |
