Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.'s Hamakita Site complex, location of the company's Hamakita Factory and YMC's manufacturing affiliate Mint Co. Ltd. (Site Representative: Mitsunori Koyama, Hamakita Factory Director), is the recent recipient of certification under the ISO14001 environmental management standard of the International Organization for Standardization. On hand to present the official ISO14001 certificate at a ceremony held at the Hamakita Factory on February 12, 1999, were representatives of the Registration Body of the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI).
The ISO's 14001 certification is an international standard that sets the qualifications and standards for an environmental management system that functions to reduce the environmental impact of a company's business/manufacturing operations.
As of July 1998, Yamaha Motor has appointed an internal inspection committee with company-wide responsibility that is now undertaking full-fledged in-house inspections aimed at establishing comprehensive environmental management programs. As for the recent certification, it was based on a series of inspections conducted by an independent non-profit certification authority, the Registration Body of the JARI, that began in earnest this January and resulted in the final ISO14001 certification on February 8, 1999. This certification means that Yamaha's Environmental Management System meets the international standards set by the ISO.
At Hamakita Site, full-fledged preparations for ISO certification began in 1998 largely by Hamakita Factory, which engages primarily in the manufacture of parts for Yamaha motorcycles, snowmobiles and ATVs, and Mint Co., Ltd., which manufactures special-purpose machines and automation equipment. This certification, by the way, represents the first in its category ever won by Yamaha group affiliates in Japan.
Yamaha Motor has made dealing with environmental problems one of our primary corporate goals. In 1993 our first "Action Program for Environmental Conservation" was adopted, and in November of that same year we launched sales of our environment-friendly electro-hybrid bicycle Yamaha PAS. This was followed by other milestones like the opening of our energy-reclaiming type waste incineration facility "ACEP (Amenity Clean Energy Plant)" in April of 1995 and our self-imposed recycling initiative program that went into action in February of 1998. Furthermore, to ensure the active pursuit of environmental measures, we established "The Year 2000 Environmental Plan" in 1996, and this has been followed by an even more comprehensive "Environmental Vision for the year 2010" adopted in January of this year as another step toward more aggressive company-wide action with stronger objectives and higher level goals.
The efforts for ISO certification at the Hamakita Site represent one more part of our "The Year 2000 Environmental Plan" agenda that will set a strong precedent for the environmental management systems we will implement in order to realize the environmental vision laid down in our new "Environmental Vision for the year 2010." In the future, our efforts will continue to win this same international certification in succession for each of the eight other Yamaha factory sites in Japan (the Soude Site, Nakaze Site, Third and Fifth Site, Morimachi Site, Arai Site, Fukuroi Site, Toyooka Site and the YMC Headquarters Site).
With regard to Yamaha's overseas production bases, it should be noted that the electrical components manufacturer IIC Taiwan Ltd. and our motorcycle manufacturing and marketing subsidiary Yamaha Motor Taiwan Co., Ltd. have already received ISO14001 certification on May 28, 1998, and October 20, 1998, respectively. |
